Stop pollutants at the source

Re: “Make sewage plant beautiful and functional,” letter, Feb. 15.

The writer refers to people daily flushing bleach, paint, cleaning products and drugs down the drains.

Maybe the better solution would be to reduce or recycle this stuff before people dump it down the toilet. It would certainly be a lot cheaper to institute better source-control programs than spend a billion dollars for a system to clean it up after the fact.

Once this system is built, people will save themselves the cost and time of driving to recycling depots and paying disposal fees by pouring even more stuff down the toilet. Old motor oil, household solvents, oil-based paints … down the drain with it. And all of it will end up buried at Hartland, creating another Rock Bay in the process.

And why not? If they are paying $500 more a year in taxes for it, taxpayers will want to get their money’s worth.
