Sky’s the limit for female pilots

Much has been written recently about an airline having a female pilot.

On Saturday, I had the privilege to visit the Victoria Flying Club to attend the launch of the Vancouver Island chapter of Women in Aviation.

It was a delight to meet many wonderful people so dedicated to their profession. I was also amazed to meet many young female students at various stages of their pilot training, each of them enthusiastic and looking forward to a bright future in aviation. They are being taught by highly trained pilot instructors who are happy in their job and who make learning fun.

As a young woman, I was a pilot back in the 1940s, and although I did not personally experience any problem, it is true that getting a job flying or being accepted in commercial flying was practically impossible for a woman. That was many years ago and thank goodness the situation has changed, or almost, as was seen recently.

All the people involved with the Victoria Flying Club should be highly commended and I’m sure the Vancouver Island chapter of Women in Aviation will be a big success.

I strongly encourage any young woman who has a dream of pursuing a career in aviation to follow that dream. Today, the sky’s the limit.
