Re: “Free reflective gear could save lives,” Jan. 3.
The letter regarding free reflective gear is very timely. The Town of Sidney is already taking steps to implement the writer’s suggestion of providing free reflective gear.
We will launch our “Glow as you Go” campaign on Thursday, Jan. 17, in response to the rash of pedestrian/vehicle accidents within the region. Spearheaded by Coun. Kenny Podmore, the town has partnered with the Sidney RCMP to distribute reflective arm bands, free of charge to Sidney residents.
Sidney is known as a pedestrian-friendly community, and council believes that by being proactive we are providing our residents with the knowledge and tools to keep them safe, especially during the dark, rainy winter months.
To our knowledge, Sidney is the first community on the Island to undertake such an initiative, and it is our hope that other communities will follow our example and that it will save lives.
