Re: "Prostate screening not backed by evidence," Nov. 14.
I am 80 and am lucky my doctor had me on four blood tests a year which included PSA. One three-month interval "spiked" and he referred me to a urologist, who determined by biopsy that my prostate was full of aggressive cancer. I was treated by hormones and radiation. The cancer has gone (for now).
I have had four deceased friends, all of whom had a PSA test occasionally, but their prostate cancers were well advanced when discovered. Prostate cancer can be as swift as a cheetah or as slow as a tortoise.
I think Alan Cassels should stick to debating capes. When he tries to apply statistics to prostate cancer, he is affecting peoples' lives, not a few bucks on the stock market.
