Re: "Police told to delete licence plate data," Nov. 16
The privacy commissioner's concern about police patrol cars recording licence plate numbers is absurd.
Cameras are ubiquitous. The police-camera records are random, not targeted. They are not unlike cameras in banks and convenience stores. Public cameras are here to stay and they will continue to proliferate. They are no more invasive than watching people in the street from the living room window.
There are legitimate privacy issues to be examined, but the focus should be on targeted invasions of privacy, not random general data collection.
