Re: “Police amalgamation would save money,” Jan. 24.
Perhaps it is time to allow the residents of Greater Victoria to speak clearly on this issue, as our leaders all seem unable to reach agreement. Many mayors opt for the status quo, citing the need for greater local accountability. Who is accountable for the criminals who cross municipal boundaries?
Provincial politicians say the mayors need to agree before they can take action, which is patently false, given the steps already taken in Victoria and Esquimalt.
In conversations with many people, I have yet to meet one who feels we are properly served by the present fractured police forces. Let’s add a referendum question to the municipal ballots, and once a clear answer is received, perhaps 40 years of talking about change can lead to action on our collective safety and security.
