Re: “Victoria’s push to lower speed limit to 40 km/h gathering momentum,”Jan. 12.
Lowering the municipal speed limits to 40 km/h will accomplish little except to further frustrate drivers and increase congestion.
The problem on our roads is not traffic speed but the poor habits of pedestrians and cyclists. Almost daily I see people ignoring Don’t Walk signals, riding through stop signs and red lights, or simply stepping into the streets without taking their eyes off their phones.
Worst of all are the parents who drag their young children with them as they blatantly disobey the rules that are simple common sense. When these adults jaywalk or race across the road against the traffic signals with kids in tow, is it any wonder people are growing up with such disregard for traffic safety.
Do not lower the speed limits, educate the pedestrians.
