Orcas need more salmon, not research

Isn’t this typical of particularly Liberal federal governments? Don’t do anything practical to solve the problem of starving southern resident orcas, but provide money for further study, again, to death.

Trouble is, it will be the death of B.C.’s iconic marine mammal. All this does is allow for academics to produce another report, at best, or a thesis for a student searching for an original topic, at worst.

What the orcas need is many more salmon. Period. I should claim one per cent of the federal research grant. Even in their weakened state, orcas’ sophisticated sonar keeps most of them away from ships crossing the Salish Sea. The costly noise device for ships might not be a total waste of taxpayer funds, but it would be far better spent in hatcheries and other ways of connecting orcas to food.
