Oak Bay deer cull is pointless and cruel

How is distracting deer difficult? Plant herbs, chives or garlic to mask the sweet smell of deer favourites. One strand of fishing line around plantings or the yard is effective. Combine wind chimes, garden objects and lighting.

The deer were here long before any resident of Oak Bay arrived. Their natural habitat continues to diminish — and is the only reason you think you’re seeing more of them. Small groups are families migrating together, seeking safe refuge along the way before moving along. Families are not deer gangs — so put your traps and deadbolts away. Clover traps are capable of trapping moms of fawns, and fawns themselves.

How did we arrive here, with deer vilified for simply attempting to live in their natural habitat? They should not be killed for protecting their young or defending them from dogs.

Animal-cruelty laws apply equally to your neighbourhood and should apply to Mayor Nils Jensen, who is vocally pro-kill. What kind of a precedent would this set? Council must overturn this decision and oversee a return to sanity in this neighbourhood so intent on destroying local deer, protecting all species native to the area.

Deer will not destroy forests — people do. Educate residents to avoid deer during mating and birthing season. These animals have a right to this area, and a right to life. A cull is pointless, cruel and must be abolished.
