Motorcycle safety is underfunded

How many people are aware that May is Motorcycle Awareness month? How many people even care? Here are some interesting statistics provided by the government on average deaths per year in B.C.

How many people are aware that May is Motorcycle Awareness month? How many people even care?

Here are some interesting statistics provided by the government on average deaths per year in B.C. over a five-year span:

Automobiles — 258

Pedestrians — 59

Motorcyclists — 32

Bicyclists — 10

Each year, the government spends millions on bicycle awareness and infrastructure, hundreds of thousands on pedestrian awareness and infrastructure.

It spends nothing on motorcycle awareness, despite data that show 70 per cent of motorcycle accidents are caused by motorists. It is always a knee-jerk reaction on the part of politicians, police and the media to blame motorcyclists for any incidents.

While promoting safety is always a good idea, it would be an even better idea if all were included equally instead of safety and awareness promotion being based on the loudest lobbies.

It is up to everyone to do their part and be aware of all others, including pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists.
