Re: “100 years ago,” March 17.
What a storied history we have in Victoria. However, I was disappointed that there was no mention of motorcycles in the automobiles section — bicycles, yes, motorcycles, no. The Victoria Motorcycle Club has roots back to 1906 when it was combined with the car club of the day. In 1912, the motorcycles separated from the cars and it became known as the Victoria Motorcycle Club.
It is the longest continual motorized club in Victoria. We are still active in the community, with more than 260 members. We own property in Metchosin, where some of our numerous events are held, and for many years we have participated in the May Day Parade.
In 2010, we were inducted into the Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame. This year, the Shanks family, Richard (Pop) and sons Bob and Reg, owners of the defunct Brooklands Motorcycle Sales, have been posthumously nominated to be inducted. Our website is vmc.bc.ca.
We are proud of our heritage and look forward to many more years of participating in the community of Victoria.
