Re: "Ferry riders ask to help cut $26M," Oct. 30.
The solution to this complex problem transcends partisan politics. I would like to participate and help out as best I can.
However, how can I or anyone else be expected to engage in a meaningful discussion on how to prevent our fundamental transport links from being deep-sixed when so many questions are left unanswered?
The government asks for our help, but provides no detailed insight into the complicated financial ramifications reducing ferry service would have on business, suppliers and contractors.
How many jobs would be lost? How will it affect families? What federal-provincial taxes do ferry workers pay? How many spinoff jobs do these workers generate? What percentage of the corporations fuel cost is tax they pay to the federal and provincial governments?
These are but a few of the questions that need to be addressed before any decisions are made on cutting essential services and much-needed jobs.
