Mayor chose developer over View Royal residents

View Royal Mayor David Screech wants to reassure us that “the community will be involved in the [Christie Point] design process.” However, it is telling that the mayor listed “adherence to our official community plan” last in his list of the input that was considered in approving the Christie Point development.

The OCP should have been the first and last form of input considered; it is, after all, the community’s official plan for development. Input from the developer, which came third in his list, should not have entered the considerations.

RealStar bought the Christie Point property with an OCP in place. It then asked View Royal council to ignore the OCP and allow it to triple the density on the property, a change that was widely and passionately opposed by the community.

In the end, the mayor placed the interests of a $6-billion corporation from Toronto above those of the residents of View Royal, who will bear all the costs and receive none of the benefits of this development. And he really expects us to “agree to disagree”?

The mayor’s only responsibility is to represent the interests of the residents of View Royal, a duty that he has utterly failed to fulfil.
