Make farming affordable for those starting out

Times Colonist
February 26, 2013

On Sunday, I attended the memorial service for Mark Mitchell and Emily Morin, two fine young people who wanted to have a piece of farmland to farm organically. But land here is so expensive, it is prohibitive for any young farmer starting out.

Someone needs to explain why we have an Agricultural Land Reserve if our young people can’t afford to farm.

This young couple’s lives were cut tragically short by a fire, and they were unable to pursue their dream, but if we want to create a lasting legacy to Mark and Emily, make agricultural land available to those young horticulturist/farmers starting out.
