I feel safe in saying that, outside the Conservative cabinet, there is not a single Canadian who would say: "Let's save some money and con our returning wounded soldiers into taking a one-time lump-sum payment for their troubles."
This is the direction the Harper government is taking, firing a financially destructive barrage at our bravest and vulnerable citizens by taking away a safety net and deserved ongoing support in favour of a one-time payout. It's equal to an eight-to 10-year kiss-off. That is how long the average payout will last - if the soldier lives in poverty.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper is always willing to sell off our oil reserves to the highest bidder, but when it comes to looking after those who fought for his government, he becomes the low bidder in decency and respect and financial support.
