Loyalties don’t always conflict

Re: “Leaders should have wisdom of 13-year-old,” letter, Jan. 16.

The letter-writer quoted U.S. astronaut Scott Carpenter (and you featured a picture of him on the Comment page) who declared that the highest loyalty should be to the family of humans and the planet before country, religion and self.

This is true when these are conflicting loyalties, as they are for some people. For me, loyalty to my country and my religion and myself includes loyalty to the family of humans and the planet.
