Re: “Petronas LNG megaproject planned for coast scrapped,” July 26.

It’s a sign of the times: The Pacific NorthWest LNG board cancelled what was to be the largest LNG project in B.C. because of “prolonged depressed prices and shifts in the energy industry.”

An example of this shift? Energy-consuming giant China has invested more than half a trillion dollars in renewables in the past five years alone. In 2016, China produced enough solar panels to cover three soccer fields every hour.

The proponent’s decision to cancel opens the door for B.C. to take advantage of economic opportunities in the clean-energy fields, rather than recklessly putting all its eggs in the single industry of LNG.

The clean-energy economy is more than just the installation of solar panels and wind turbines. It includes the minerals that are mined, new technologies created and people involved in the process. Growing the clean-energy economy creates jobs for workers right across this spectrum.
