Liberals want Trudeau to keep promises

Re: “Voting reforms don’t add up, Liberals say,” Dec. 2.

As long-serving and now long-suffering Liberals committed to electoral reform, we call on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to ensure that the Liberal government delivers on three key election promises:

• introduce legislation to enact electoral reform by May 2017;

• make every vote count;

• ensure that 2015 will be the last first-past-the-post election.

Senior leaders in our party are now saying that we should break these campaign promises, set aside principle and ignore evidence-based policy.

We ask the prime minister to join the consensus of experts and Canadians who presented to the House of Commons electoral reform committee in favour of proportional representation. It’s time to put the country ahead of the party, and state clearly to the Liberal caucus and the Canadian people that we are going to deliver on our promises.

Better is always possible. We need the prime minister’s personal leadership and we need it now.
