Thank goodness the U.S. election is over. The tension I felt on election night was overwhelming as I imagine it was for millions of people all over the world. Obama's speech was awe-inspiring.
The U.S. claims to be the leader of democracy in the modern world. Yet Americans use weapons (attack ads and lies) against those who differ in values and perspective. These are as harmful and divisive as the weapons being used in conflict globally.
To become real role models, they have to begin to work together. It is time to stop the vitriolic attacks and show how to embrace difference with goodwill. There is a real opportunity here to regain respect in the world, and show that democracy can work.
