It’s disappointing to see electoral-reform waffling

I am so disappointed in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Democratic Institutions Minister Maryam Monsef. Obviously, the multiparty electoral reform committee was just a sham. Their recommendations were not what Trudeau wanted to hear, so he instructed Monsef to attack the committee and dismiss its findings.

I was so hopeful when Trudeau made electoral reform an election promise, and really thought he was a man of vision. He seemed to rise above the interests of the Liberal party to consider an electoral system that was fair to all parties and to all Canadians. I understand now that he just said that to get elected.

I attended Monsef’s forum in Victoria and also spoke at the committee’s town hall here. It was clear at that time that Monsef did not really understand electoral reform, as the presentation and written information from her group were incomprehensible.

The committee got feedback in their meetings here in Victoria and across the country that a vast majority of people want a fairer voting system, some version of proportional representation. The committee did an amazing job of working together across party lines and should have been commended, not told that they did not do their job.
