Hiring PR firm won’t do the trick

Re: “Clear message for sewage,” April 2.

“The Capital Regional District has issued a request for proposals for a company to supply communications services and issues-management advice on the controversial wastewater treatment program … The CRD is committed to ensuring targeted and timely communications to the stakeholders and the public.”

I can’t believe I’m reading this, having just lived through a similar scenario in Cowichan where the regional district bought property for a recycling drop-off depot before consulting the community. When the community strenuously objected to the location, the Cowichan Valley Regional District also decided it was a PR problem and hired a communications firm in an attempt to make the objections go away.

CRD, take note: It didn’t work in Cowichan and it won’t work here. When you’ve made a mistake, it’s best just to own up and move on. Save us the expense of a PR firm. The wastewater treatment program is going to be expensive enough, thank you very much.
