Heavy-handedness seen in sewage issue

“Macaulay Point not right for sewage plant,” letter, June 14.

Since I no longer live in Victoria, I have refrained from entering the discussion. However, when I see the insensitivity of the Capital Regional District committee toward the residents of Macaulay Point and Esquimalt generally, and their investment in their properties and surrounding area, I must raise some issues for consideration.

I drove in to Macaulay Point, parked the car and had a walk around a spot of beauty and reflection. The houses in the area are well kept and there appears to be a great pride of ownership.

At the same time, I noticed a vast area of vacant Department of National Defence land to the east of this area. Has the CRD or local politicians approached the DND or the federal government about securing a 99-year lease on the lands for a treatment plant and a secondary plant? This plant could be located at the far eastern end away from the residential area. If this approach was taken, I have never read of the result.

I apologize for raising this issue, but I am troubled by government heavy-handedness in this issue.
