Now that the local byelection is over, the Greens have declared a victory of sorts, since they made a good showing even though they didn't win.
They think that the result has made them a viable party in Canada for future elections.
Ideally, I would be a Green supporter and I love Elizabeth May and what she has done for the country.
I have huge concerns, however, for the effect of the Green party on future federal elections. I was living in the U.S. in 2000 when Ralph Nader and the Green party gave the election to George W. Bush by siphoning off Democrat votes.
We all know the horrific effect that has had on the U.S. and the world. My daughter voted Green in that election and regrets it to this day. The Green party in the U.S. has virtually disappeared because of that election.
I sincerely hope the Green party in Canada realizes before the next federal election that they need to join forces with an existing party rather than act as a spoiler and pave the way for another Stephen Harper majority.
