One of the clearest lessons from the climate-change debate is that we should stop burning coal.
It is disappointing to read that the big blue machine taking shape in Sidney is designed to help the world burn more. Perhaps all the coal it handles will be “metallurgical,” used in making steel, but even this involves burning a large fraction, and I don’t believe there is any way of knowing how exported coal is actually used.
The article stresses that building the machine has brought local jobs and helped our economy, but it is still not something we should be pleased to see.
