Giant gun image sends wrong message at game

Times Colonist
January 2, 2013

My family and I went to a Victoria Royals hockey game over the weekend and were thrilled to see our Royals come from behind a 3-0 deficit and win the game in a shootout, 4-3. And the word shootout is what prompts this letter.

On the giant scoreboard at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre, there is a flashing sign reading “shootout.” The sign shows a revolver, which is turned and aimed at the crowd and then fires.

In these days of grief over the deaths of children and adults in Connecticut and other senseless killings, many of us have the tragedy on our minds.

While the gun on the scoreboard is intended to announce an exciting end to a game, it may convey another message, which I find disturbing. We need fewer guns in this world, not more.
