Re: “Cordova Bay development needs special permit,” July 24.

Are we to believe the three current owners of the two plaza lots had no thoughts of where they were building in relation to the history of this area? How could that be?

Two suggestions: Perhaps the previous owners thought this through a little, and that is why their development permit of 1998/99 had almost no requirement to excavate in an area where history spoke for itself.

Second, let’s just either go back to that — no underground parking — and cancel approval of the development permit amendment from Jan. 29, or Saanich could take over these lands and fully dedicate the property to history and evidence from pre-colonial times.

The developers now face a project with extraordinary costs, and from the fact the architect is only now discussing this with the province, the developers’ project cost/benefit is out of the window. They can’t suggest pricing in the condo market will foot this bill.

As Saanich grasps the supportive housing needs in the Nigel Valley, here is another win for the municipality in really recognizing the extraordinary losses by First Nations’ ancestors. These opportunities are very rare.
