Re: "It would make sense to keep the HST," Dec. 2.
There are avenues other than for a government to impose yet another tax. Witness the enormous waste and the daily barrage of expensive ads telling us how good the government is.
The letter-writer makes no mention of the fact that for every dollar the government collects from the harmonized sales tax, the big corporations collect $4. It's corporations like the big American General Electric - building the "run of the river projects" to sell electricity to B.C. Hydro at a price higher than B.C.
Hydro can sell it for - that benefit most. It's the company wanting to build a pipeline and those that ship raw logs to the U.S. and China. I, too, benefit by getting back the little my company pays in HST.
The writer asks what was in it for me to fight the HST. It was more than two years of hard work for Lillian and me, with the Fight the HST team and thousands of wonderful volunteers and the satisfaction of knowing that democracy can work.
Maybe the writer should think more about the hard-working person in Nanaimo who pays the freight so that government can continue to waste and the big corporations collect the benefit, instead of questioning why so many people would fight for a just cause.
