Extremists won’t win with PR vote system

Former premier Ujjal Dosanjh has advised us not to vote for proportional representation because it opens B.C. to the election of fringe parties. This is misleading and unfair.

The way PR would work, if the referendum passes, parties with less than five per cent of the overall vote can’t elect an MLA, so extremist parties won’t get elected.

When Doug Ford and Stephen Harper can get elected with well under a majority and thus hold complete power, something is wrong. Under our current B.C. government, the Greens can hold Premier John Horgan’s feet to the fire, forcing the NDP to stand strong against the Kinder Morgan expansion.

To me, this is a good thing and the remedy for the non-representational governments we’ve elected over many years.
