Elizabeth May is the best MP I have ever had. Saanich Gulf-Islands returned her to Parliament with an increased majority. She is our gift to Canada.

I cannot understand why columnist Lawrie McFarlane would say May should join another party, as her principles and values resonate with the bold ideas of the Green Party. It is a party for the future, essential for our changing times.

McFarlane states: “Her party’s performance in the last month’s federal election was pathetic.” In view of the fact that its leader was excluded from most debates, received very little press coverage, and the country was obsessed with strategic voting, it is good to know that 3.5 per cent of the electorate still voted Green. How different it would have been if May had been able to introduce the Green Party to more Canadians.

As McFarlane says, there are similarities between the Green Party and other parties. I was happy to see the Liberals adopt many Green policies and know that Justin Trudeau believes in democracy and seeks to build equality. However, there are important differences. The Green Party is non-partisan, requiring candidates to sign a pledge to put their constituents, the country and the planet ahead of the party.

To quote May: “It is our job to tirelessly work for justice, for peace, and for a planet that can survive with a human civilization that thrives. This is the challenge that we take on as Greens.”
