Doctors deserve fair compensation

As a family member of one of the 77 who chose medically assisted dying on the Island in 2016, I cannot give enough praise to the two doctors who facilitated Dad’s departure.

They were both attentive to his concerns, meeting with him immediately. I was at all four meetings. There were also several phone calls and emails. They were long and comprehensive.

Not once did either doctor convey any need to rush the meeting. Without discussing how they were reimbursed, it was obvious that this was more of a “volunteer” effort for the docs.

As Dad glibly and realistically said: “Look at how much I am saving this system” with his choice.

As crass as it might sound, Ministry of Health officials across the country should do the math when considering how to fairly compensate physicians for this new and increasingly popular and dignified approach to the end of life.
