Cruise ships must have shore power

While we all enjoy seeing cruise ships in our harbour and are clearly proud to show off Victoria to all who visit our beautiful city, I don’t think we should even consider making us a cruise home port until there is shore power provided to all who dock.

With something like 240 sailings expected this season, that alone should warrant shore power, as all ships continue to “idle” the whole time they’re in harbour. As well, this could apply to the Cable Innovator vessel that appears to be at Ogden Point full-time these days. Yes, the initial monetary outlay might sound exorbitant but wouldn’t it be well worth it in the long run?

The planned Ogden Point development and downtown area would surely benefit from fewer pollutants. Don’t even get me started on the sooty diesel exhausts spewing out of the tour buses downtown. Oh, excuse me, we have one electric vehicle. Whoopee!
