CRD, not Polak, created sewage impasse

Re: “Polak created sewage impasse,” editorial, July 13.

Environment Minister Mary Polak’s decision not to intervene in the sewage dispute is founded on and respectful of municipal government rights.

It is the Capital Regional District’s lack of respect for those rights that created the initial problem — leading the CRD to develop a plan without adequate community input, while issuing RFPs and starting auxiliary construction before obtaining the plant’s legally required zoning approval.

Since that time, the CRD has attempted to justify its plan and solve the problem with an attitude of conflict and threats rather than looking for compromise and better solutions for the community’s concerns.

It is the CRD that has created the impasse we now face — and not Polak. So it is now time for the CRD to bite the bullet and start building a compromise solution.
