Re: “City councillor says it ‘sucks’ that pool, unlike others, won’t be open,” Feb. 6.
I know there have been many letters written over the years about terms of speech and changes to the English language. Most of them have been degrading additions, in my opinion.
But must we accept that a city councillor could not come up with a more erudite term other than “that sucks” when commenting on the closure of the Crystal Pool on B.C.’s first Family Day?
That has me wanting to step up on my soapbox. Yes, the expression is found in online dictionaries, but is considered slang. How easily we fall into facile ways of speaking. I would like to hear a more intelligent remark from an elected city official.
And don’t tell me she’s speaking for greater understanding for the masses.
