Copy Sweden’s tough laws to fight drunk driving

Re: “Drunk driving penalties thrown out,” Feb. 1.

I just don’t get it. Why is our society so fixated on “equal rights” for drunk drivers, when we all know that the victims of the these drivers’ actions certainly do not have equal rights, nor do the families and friends of the victims?

As we know all too well. Our daughter, who was killed by a drunk driver (not his first offence), did not have a second chance.

I think Sweden has the right answer: One offence and you lose your licence and your car, never to drive again.

Maybe, in that way, more innocent victims will have the right to grow up and be responsible citizens.
