Tourism Victoria appreciates Monique Keiran’s column, as it brings to light the positioning of the destination as a romantic getaway, but we cannot take all the credit.

The city viewpoints bathed in pink lights are actually an initiative of the City of Victoria. The city has put these kissing spots all over town as part of a collaboration with Tourism Victoria and the Downtown Victoria Business Association. The DVBA is responsible for the stunning rows of red and pink trees lighting up Government Street.

It is important to acknowledge the partnerships that are allowing Greater Victoria to shine and offer compelling reasons for customers to experience our city. The Empress Hotel is also lighting up pink and red as part of this collaboration as are the Hotel Grand Pacific, the Delta Ocean Pointe Resort and Spa, and the Chateau Victoria. Local businesses are also getting into the game, offering romance-themed packages and events such as the Royal B.C. Museum’s Night Shift: Wild Romance event.

As we continue as a region to build reasons to visit Greater Victoria beyond the peak summer season, region-wide collaboration and partnership allow us to put forward a competitive offering that is working.

In fact, thanks to region-wide collaboration positioning Greater Victoria as a Christmas destination, travel in November and December has increased significantly from 2012 to 2014. Hotel occupancy for these months is up 9.5 per cent and the amount we are charging for hotel rooms at this time is up 14.5 per cent.
