B.C.’s poverty rate is nothing to brag about

Premier Christy Clark doesn’t need to fly her son to India to experience poverty and learn empathy. British Columbia has the second-worst poverty rate in the country, despite the province’s wealth. In stark contrast, the B.C. Liberals announced they have already raked in $12.5 million in election donations. (Through cash-for-access dinners?)

In a stunning example of Orwellian double-speak, Clark brags that B.C. is leading the way in addressing climate change, then gives the go-ahead for a seven-fold increase in bitumen-tanker traffic off our coast.

She doesn’t mention that B.C. is set to overshoot its goal for carbon emissions by 400 per cent.

Citizens without the cash for access (to either our provincial or our federal governments) will have to use our voices and votes — loud and clear — if we truly want government that will put the public interest ahead of corporate interests.
