Appeal board ruling a kick in the guts

Re: “Dumping tainted soil gets the go-ahead,” March 21. With regard to the Environmental Appeal Board ruling in favour of a toxic waste dump in the Shawnigan watershed, hugely disappointing doesn’t quite cover it. More like a kick in the guts.

The EAB’s “on the balance of probabilities” conclusion that this is safe is woefully feeble and completely non-reassuring. While the powers that be might think it’s OK to foist this potential danger on a small community, residents across B.C. should be alarmed that this roll-the-dice attitude to the safety of drinking water is acceptable.

The ruling sets a precedent that suggests no watersheds are off limits for toxic waste dumps. Where’s that at? Certainly not respect for the residents of Shawnigan, nor for the environment.

Not good enough.
