Tributes to Norman Ruff from interviews and social media:

Very sad to hear of the passing of #UVic professor Norman Ruff, a wonderful person whose sharp intellect enlivened #bcpoli for decades.

— Education Minister Rob Fleming

“He really was first and foremost a gentleman. He was a very kind man and incredibly sharp and incredibly smart. He was a walking encyclopedia about B.C. politics. No one knew B.C. politics like he did.”

— Finance Minister Carole James

“He was unfailingly helpful and always understood reporter’s peculiar needs. I’m so glad he got to witness the last three months of B.C. politics.”

— Les Leyne, Times Colonist columnist

Sad news on the political front. Uvic political scientist Norman Ruff passed away in hospice last evening. The teacher of us all.

— Vaughn Palmer, Vancouver Sun columnist

His lectures on B.C. politics and Canadian federalism were masterful. I enjoyed his classes in the late 1970s and held Prof. Ruff in high regard. Along with his many students through the years, I will miss his wit and insights. Thank you for inspiring me and many others who entered politics and public service in British Columbia. Rest in peace.

— Shane Janzen, on Facebook

It has been said that Dr. Ruff graciously observed every side of the political spectrum with equal insight, accuracy and thought. Respected by all, he was held in the highest esteem by politicians of all stripes, even among those who were in the critical crosshairs.

— UVic president Jamie Cassels

One of the best graduate classes I’ve even taken. He will be greatly missed, but his contributions will never be forgotten. Thank you, Dr. Ruff.
