Believe in athletes, not the rest of it

As the Games draw near, let me say "I believe." I believe "own the podium" is a distasteful slogan, reflecting the arrogance so characteristic of the United States.

I believe that suspension of civil liberties and stopping critics at our border is distinctly un-Canadian. I believe there may be a special place in hell for whoever dreamed up the ad campaign using those kids Jack Knox so aptly described as Children of the Corn. I believe I will be paying part of the bill for this fiasco for a long time.

I believe neither I nor Canada will be responsible for the competitive success or failure of our athletes. Nevertheless, I believe my heart will probably swell with Canadian pride when one of them, after years of sacrifice and preparation, achieves a personal best -- and places fifth. Here's to you, and medals be damned.
