On the Street: Western Forest Products gets new chairman

Western Forest Products chairman Dominic Gammiero is retiring and leaving the company’s board of directors. Gammiero, who joined the board in 2006, served as Western’s CEO between October 2010 and February 2013, and as chairman thereafter.

Taking over as chairman is Lee Doney, who has played a role in the company’s turnaround since its restructuring completed in 2004.

“On behalf of the board of directors, I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to Dominic for his significant contribution to the company over the last seven years,” Doney said. “He provided critical leadership to our company during a very challenging period of time for the lumber industry.”

 

New rumours of Island store untrue: Ikea

 

If it’s spring on the Island, it’s time for another Ikea rumour. As though on cue, a rumour the Swedish furniture giant is considering a location near Nanaimo has been making the rounds.

And as usual there’s nothing to it.

According to Madeleine Löwenborg-Frick, Ikea’s manager of corporate communications in Canada, the company is still not ready to come back to the Island. “While Ikea is continually reviewing our expansion opportunities in Canada, there are no plans for a store on Vancouver Island at this time,” she said.

 

Courtenay cheesemaker takes top prizes

 

Natural Pastures Cheese Company, of Courtenay, brought home several ribbons from the British Empire Cheese Competition in Belleville, Ont., recently. Natural Pastures won first place for its Pacific Pepper verdelait; second place Boerenkaas and Cracked Pepper verdelait; and third place for Mozzarella di Bufala, the mozzarella made with water buffalo milk from Vancouver Island.
