Seafood vendor opens today in Hudson market

Cowichan Bay Seafood is opening today as the Victoria Public Market in the Hudson building marks its first month since opening.

Thousands of visitors poured into the market when it opened in September, fulfilling a years-long dream for many local residents. Vendors include the French Oven, Victoria Pie Co., Silk Road Tea, Salt Spring Island Cheese and Sutra, part of Vij's restaurant group in Vancouver.

The market is run by a non-profit society in 18,000 square feet of space and is developing a diverse mix of vendors. La Cocina de Mama Oli has recently opened in the market, dishing out Mexican food. The Damn Fine Cake Co. is expected to set up early next week, with kitchen supply store, Whisk, opening in December. The Grocer at the Hudson, which is being started by Hudson developer Townline, is also expected to open in December and will be selling produce and dairy products. Ravenstone Farm Artisan Meats, a family farm in Qualicum Beach, is expected to open in January.

Hotels make Condé Naste top-20 list

Four Greater Victoria hotels have made it into a list of the top-20 in western Canada according to readers of Condé Nast Traveler magazine. In its recent release of top cities, regions and resorts, Condé Nast Traveler surveyed its readers to find the top-20 hotels in the Victoria, Vancouver and Calgary areas.

According to the poll, the Wedgewood Hotel and Spa in Vancouver topped the list while Sooke Harbour House was the best of Victoria’s offerings and came in at No. 8 on the list. Victoria’s Magnolia Hotel and Spa tied with the Loden Hotel of Vancouver in the 10th spot, while the Hotel Grand Pacific was rated 12th, the Fairmont Empress was ranked 15th and the Inn at Laurel Point was 18th. Saltspring Island’s Hastings House was ranked third on the list.

Sinclair named marina GM

Steve Sinclair is the new general manager of the Oak Bay Marina on Beach Drive. Sinclair, former GM of northern resorts for the Oak Bay Marine Group, has previously managed the marina, company spokeswoman Susan Barcham said. Sinclair is a former pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays. Sinclair started his new job last month and will be involved with the Oak Bay tourism sector, Barcham said. “He’s responsible to spruce up this asset and make sure everything it running smoothly.”
