On the Street: New council for foresters

Dan Graham of North Cowichan is the new president of the 67th council of the Association of British Columbia Forest Professionals, succeeding Christine Gelowitz of Victoria. The council also includes vice-president Jonathan Lok of Port McNeill; Michael Sandvoss and Christopher Stagg of Prince George, Summerland’s Doug Campbell; Mauro Calabrese and Tom Hoffman of Williams Lake; Robin Modesto and Rod Visser of Campbell River; and Duncan’s Tom Walker. The Association is responsible for registering and regulating B.C.’s professional foresters and technologists. It is the largest professional forestry association in Canada.

The Greater Victoria Rental Development Society has selected Chow Low Hammond Architects to design a mixed-use development at 1950 Blanshard St. Construction is expected to start this fall. Knappett Projects will build the $8.5-million project that includes 65 rooms on five levels above two storeys of commercial and underground parking. Units are expected to be complete in mid-2015 ... In Nanaimo, a new supportive housing project at 1597 Boundary Ave. is starting soon. The four-storey building with 41 units will have a call for general contractors in March. Designs are underway with Chow Low Hammond Architects ... Tech Mechanical Systems and Brewis Electric have been awarded contracts for interior renovations of the Cedar Building at Royal Roads University. Durwest Construction is leading the $1-million project and anticipates completion this summer.

The Peter B. Gustavson School of Business at the University of Victoria and the Centre for Social and Sustainable Innovation will host Changing Landscapes: Communities and Extractive Industries on Feb. 24 from 7 to 9 p.m., Room A104, David Turpin Building. Admission is free. The forum will discuss challenges, responsibilities and opportunities arising from energy and mining industry companies establishing operations in a community.

Panel members include Dan Lewis,Clayoquot Action; Art Mercer, Nisga’a Commercial Group; Brent Bergeron, Goldcorp Inc.; and Nathalie Ross, Natural Resources Canada. Dave Obee, editor-in-chief of the Times Colonist, will moderate the event.

Accountants honoured

Victoria’s Charles R. Burkett and Kyman T. Chan have been honoured with fellowships by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia. The fellowship designation is awarded to chartered accountants for contributions to the community and service to the profession. Burkett is the owner of Burkett and Co. Chartered Accountants. Prior to opening his firm in 2000, Burkett was managing partner of the Victoria Deloitte office. Chan is a partner with Hayes Stewart Little & Co. Chartered Accountants in Victoria. Each are known for their extensive volunteer work.
