ALPINE SKIING

Women’s combined — Valerie Grenier, Mont-Tremblant, Que., finished sixth overall with a cumulative time of 2:23.44. It was Canada’s best ever Olympic result in that event. Candace Crawford and Roni Remme, both Toronto, failed to complete their runs in the downhill element and did not qualify for the slalom.

Men’s slalom — Philip Brown, Toronto, placed 22nd in the event (1:41.94); Erik Read, Calgary, was 29th (1:48.55); Trevor Philp, Calgary, was 25th in the first run (49.95), but failed to complete his second attempt on the course.

BIATHLON

Women’s 4x6km relay — Canada (Sarah Beaudry, Prince George, B.C. Rosanna Crawford, Canmore, Alta., Emma Lunder, Vernon, B.C. and Julia Ransom, Kelowna, B.C.) finished 10th (1:13:36.8).

CURLING

Men — Canada (Kevin Koe, Edmonton, Marc Kennedy, St. Albert, Alta., Brent Laing, Meaford, Ont., Ben Hebert, Regina, Scott Pfeifer, St. Albert, Alta.) lost their semifinal match 5-3 versus the U.S. Canada will still compete for the bronze medal on Feb. 23 against Switzerland.

FREESTYLE SKIING

Women’s ski cross — Canada grabbed the top three spots in the seedings race. Marielle Thompson of Whistler, B.C., posted the fastest time (1:13.11); Kelsey Serwa, Kelowna, B.C., was second (1:13.334); Brittany Phelan, Mont-Tremblant, Que., third (1:13.56); and India Sherret, Cranbrook, B.C., 11th (1:15.48). The main event will be held on Friday.

Men’s halfpipe final — Noah Bowman, Calgary, finished fifth with a top score of 89.40; Mike Riddle, Sherwood Park, Alta, finished sixth with a top score of 85.40.

HOCKEY

Women — Haley Irwin, Thunder Bay, Ont., and Marie-Philip Poulin, Beauceville, Que., scored in the second period, but Canada lost 3-2 to the United States in the first-ever shootout to determine the women’s Olympic champion. It has been 20 years since Canada did not win a gold medal in the Olympic Winter Games. They lost to the U.S. in the gold medal game in 1998 in Nagano, Japan.

SPEED SKATING

Short Track

Women’s 1,000 — Kim Boutin, Sherbrooke, Que., won a silver medal (1:29.956). It tied Canada’s best ever Olympic result and is Boutin’s third medal of the games. Valerie Maltais, was penalized in her semifinal and finished the event ranked seventh overall. Marianne St-Gelais, Saint-Felicien, Que., was third in her quarter-final (1:30.180) and finished the event ranked 11th.

Men 500 — Samuel Girard, Ferland-et-Boilleau, Que., finished fourth in the A final (39.584).

Men’s 5,000 relay — Canada (Charle Cournoyer, Boucherville, Que., Pascal Dion, Montreal, Girard and Charles Hamelin, Sainte-Julie, Que.) won a bronze medal (6:32.282). It was Girard’s second medal of the games.

SNOWBOARDING

Women’s Big Air Spencer O’Brien, Courtenay, B.C., ranked ninth in the event with 113.25 points, Canada’s best ever Olympic result. Laurie Blouin, Stoneham, Que., was 12th (39.25);

Note: Brooke Voigt, Fort McMurray, Alta., ended up as 17th overall, but that was following Monday’s qualifying and she didn’t compete on Thursday.
