Obama tells Cameron that the United States values "a strong UK in a strong European Union"

Desmond Butler / The Associated Press
January 17, 2013

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama is wading into a sensitive issue with close ally Britain, making clear to Prime Minister David Cameron that the U.S. hopes Britain will stay in the European Union.

The White House said that Obama told Cameron in a call Thursday that "the United States values a strong UK in a strong European Union."

Britain's future in the European Union is a hotly debated topic in London. Some Britons reacted strongly when a U.S. official made remarks similar to Obama's earlier this month.

The White House readout of the call came after Cameron postponed a key speech on the European Union. Many expected him to announce a referendum on Britain's future in the EU.
