DNA tests show skull found in woods is that of 10-year-old US girl killed by stepmother

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Police in the U.S. say a skull found a year ago by hunters in the woods is that of a disabled girl who was killed by her stepmother.

The case of 10-year-old Zahra Baker drew attention in Australia, where she had lived before her father moved to the U.S. to marry Elisa Baker.

Hickory Police Chief Tom Adkins says DNA tests show the skull is from Zahra Baker. But he says police are still unable to say how the girl died.

Elisa Baker is serving up to 18 years in prison for killing her stepdaughter.

The girl was reported missing in October 2011 from her North Carolina home.

Parts of her remains were found in multiple sites around the community shortly after her reported disappearance..
