Canadian man accused of smuggling after allegedly selling guns to undercover police officers

BISMARCK, N.D. - A Canadian man is accused of attempting to smuggle American guns into Canada after he allegedly sold six guns to an undercover officer for $24,000.

Shawn Hartnell, of Fort Francis, Ontario, is charged with two counts, including conspiracy to illegally export firearms.

Court documents say the 29-year-old Hartnell told undercover Canadian detectives last April he could get them assault rifles for $4,000 and bring them into Canada by snowmobile.

Investigators acting as buyers allegedly met Hartnell at a Grand Forks hotel earlier this week and paid him $24,000 for four semiautomatic rifles and two handguns. He was arrested after accepting the cash.

A detention hearing is scheduled Monday in Grand Forks.
