Ancient California rock carvings stolen by thieves last year are found

BISHOP, Calif. - Federal officials say they have recovered five rock carvings that were hacked off and stolen by thieves last year from a sacred American Indian site in California's Sierra Nevada.

Bureau of Land Management spokesman David Christy says the carvings were recently recovered after the agency received an anonymous tip.

No arrests have been made and officials declined to elaborate further about the discovery.

Visitors to the area, known as Volcanic Tableland, discovered the theft and reported it to federal authorities in October. The thieves are believed to have used ladders, electric generators and power saws to remove the panels.

The petroglyphs are probably worth between $500 and $1,500 on the illegal art market but are priceless to American Indians.
