Two young women were robbed at knifepoint in broad daylight near Mayfair Shopping Centre Friday.
The incident was similar to a robbery of two 11-year-old girls near the Hillside mall last week, Victoria police spokesman Const. Mike Russell said.
"This time there was a knife," he said. "This definitely ups the game."
Two women, ages 19 and 22, left Mayfair mall at about 3: 45 p.m. Friday and were walking along the 400 block of Burnside Road.
They were approached by another young woman who wanted to know the time. She appeared to be in her early 20s, about five-foot-two, slim, with green or blue eyes and dyed blond hair with a blue streak underneath. She had a silver stud nose ring.
As one of the two robbery victims took out her cellphone to check the time, the suspect pulled out a large knife and demanded cash, the phone and other items.
The robbery was interrupted by an approaching bus, but the attacker made away with makeup, cash and rings.
Police are concerned about the similarities between this incident and one that occurred Nov. 13 near Hillside Centre. In that case, two 11-year-old girls were approached by a man and woman in their 20s who asked the time and then robbed the girls of their cellphones and belongings.
"It's a similar M.O., getting the time. But a different hair colour," Russell noted.
Police are warning citizens to be selective about where they use costly electronic devices in public and be aware of their surroundings.
Also, as the most recent robbery occurred on the street, police are hoping there were witnesses who can help the investigation.
Victoria police can be contacted at their non-emergency line 250-995-7654 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
