More than 4,300 homes in the Cowichan Valley and the Gulf Islands lost electrical service Monday afternoon as a windstorm swept through the area.
The wind also brought down a tree in the evening that blocked the southbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway north of Mill Bay. Traffic was detoured.
The areas affected included a swath straddling the Trans-Canada Highway from Duncan north through North Cowichan, and in Cobble Hill, an area from Arbutus Ridge southwest to Mill Bay.
The power outages happened after Environment Canada posting a wind warning for the Victoria area. Winds gusting to 90 kilometres an hour were expected to buffet the coast through the evening.
A cold front was forecast to sweep across the south coast overnight.
