A machete, a homemade spear and an “edged weapon” were involved in three separate crimes in Port Alberni over Wednesday night and into early Thursday morning.
At about 8 p.m., police arrived at a blood-soaked scene in an apartment in the 2800 block of 5th Avenue where they found a woman bleeding from the head and chest area. A man was subsequently arrested outside a neighbouring apartment. The woman was treated at West Coast Hospital and released.
A 30-year-old Port Alberni man is in custody and was expected in court Thursday to face charges of assault causing bodily harm with a weapon. Police say alcohol was a factor.
A few hours later at 10 p.m., police arrived at the Rusty Anchor Apartments on Argyle Street and learned that a man had threatened and tried to stab a victim with a homemade spear. Investigators found two homemade spears fashioned from a shovel handle with a large kitchen knife type blade attached.
A 54-year-old Port Alberni man was arrested and expected to appear to court Thursday to face an assault with a weapon charge. Police believe that alcohol was also a factor in this case.
The 5100 block of Argyle Street was the scene of another edged-weapon incident at 4:15 a.m. Thursday. A verbal conflict escalated to the point that a man threatened others with a machete. The man then entered his vehicle and attempted to run over the victims several times before fleeing the scene. Police located that vehicle and machete and are locating the vehicle’s registered owner.
Police say that in each incident the alleged attacker and the victims were known to each other or could be identified, and emphasize that none of these attacks were random, nor are the alleged assailants expected to pose a risk to the public at large.
